Anna Valencia is dedicated to making government work better for the people of Chicago. As City Clerk, Anna will make it her mission to make city services accessible to all by bringing efficiency, innovation and transparency to government to improve the lives of all Chicagoans.
Prior to her selection as City Clerk of Chicago by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Anna was a senior government official and top political advisor. Most recently, she served as the City's Director of Legislative Counsel and Government Affairs. Before that, Anna served in leadership positions in the re-election campaigns of U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, State Senate President John Cullerton, and Congressman Mike Quigley’s (IL-05) first Congressional campaign.
Born in Granite City, Anna was raised by a union painter and a teacher’s assistant who taught her the importance of hard work and always giving back to others. As the first member of her family to go to college, Anna knows what it’s like to struggle and sees public service as a chance to help others access the same opportunities that were given to her.
Anna is passionate about education and is a mentor and founding member of the Associate Board for Chicago Scholars, a mentoring program for first-generation college bound students. She also gives her time to WITs (Working in the Schools), a tutoring and mentoring program supporting the education of children in Chicago. Outside of education, Anna is passionate about empowering women through professional development and is the co-founder of a women’s networking group that has grown to over 400 women across the Chicago-area.
Anna is a graduate of the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. Anna, her husband and their dog Jazzy reside in the West Town neighborhood. Both Anna and her husband are active members of City Church Chicago.
